Valdecilla, pionero en España con dispositivo JADA para hemorragia postparto

The University Hospital Marqués de Valdecilla has become the first public hospital in Spain to incorporate the JADA system, an innovative tool for the rapid and effective control of postpartum hemorrhage.
In a press release, the Government explained that the acquisition of the device, confirmed by the exclusive distributor Organon, positions the Cantabrian hospital at the forefront of obstetric care nationally and highlighted that postpartum hemorrhage is one of the main causes of serious complications after childbirth.
This intrauterine vacuum device offers an advanced alternative to traditional treatment, with a faster response, less need for invasive interventions, and a significant reduction in blood loss. This improves the safety and recovery of patients at a key moment in the healthcare process.
Approved by the European Commission in February 2025, JADA allows bleeding to be controlled in just two or three minutes through a vacuum mechanism that facilitates the closure of the uterine vessels responsible for the hemorrhage.
Its application avoids, in many cases, admission to intensive care or resuscitation units and promotes the mother’s bonding with her baby from the very beginning.
The Government detailed that each device costs approximately 1,200 euros per unit and offers various benefits, as it reduces the need for blood transfusions and intravenous iron treatments, decreases associated surgical interventions, shortens hospital stays, and in most cases achieves a hospitalization rate similar to that of uncomplicated childbirth.
Likewise, it stated that the accumulated experience in countries like the United States «has shown excellent results in terms of safety, effectiveness, and patient recovery.» Therefore, Valdecilla’s decision to integrate this technology «is based on this proven scientific evidence.»
APPROACH TO HUMANIZED CARE
The incorporation of this resource is aligned with Valdecilla’s care model, focused on humanizing the childbirth process, the Government emphasized.
The Delivery Area has ten dilation rooms with delivery rooms, designed for women to dilate and give birth while being observed in the same space, decorated and equipped with all the necessary technical and comfort elements.
To ensure the proper use of JADA devices, the hospital will conduct training sessions for the staff in the delivery rooms, which already have the necessary equipment for the device’s operation.
The insertion technique is simple and will be implemented quickly to ensure its immediate availability in cases that require it.
MODERNIZATION OF THE SERVICE
The incorporation of the JADA system is part of a series of improvements being carried out in the Gynecology and Obstetrics Service of the hospital.
Among them, the installation of a hydrotherapy tub in one of the delivery rooms stands out as a non-pharmacological option for pain relief during labor.
Additionally, eight decorative vinyls with landscapes of Cantabria have been placed in the work, delivery, and recovery units (UTPR), aiming to create a more friendly and relaxed environment for women and their families.
In the field of emotional support, a cold cot has also been acquired to facilitate the grieving process in cases of perinatal loss, allowing families to spend more time with their babies in appropriate conditions.
