Debemos rechazar la violencia indiscriminada

The secretary general of the PSOE in Cantabria, Pedro Casares, has stated that «we cannot remain indifferent to the intolerant and the violent» and has called on democratic political forces to «stop the spiral of hoaxes, lies, insults, and attacks that are the breeding ground for hatred and irrationality.»

This was expressed on Saturday in statements to the media, accompanied by members of the Cantabrian Socialist Executive and around 200 people who gathered at an event of condemnation at the PSOE headquarters in Cantabria in Santander, after a hooded individual entered the premises yesterday afternoon and threw homemade explosives in plastic bottles during an event on Democratic Memory attended by 70 people, without causing injuries.

Casares, emotionally acknowledging that despite receiving insults, threats on the street and on social media, and graffiti on the headquarters, they «did not expect something like this,» sent a message to society saying «here we are.»

«Here we are at the headquarters of the Socialist Party, looking into the eyes of all those people who do not respect coexistence, and we tell them that in the face of hate speech, threats, insults, and the serious incident we saw yesterday, we, the democrats, will be here.» «They will not silence us, they will not intimidate us,» he affirmed.

In addition, the secretary general of the Cantabrian Socialists pointed out that the PSOE has been «defending freedom, coexistence, solidarity, and social justice for 145 years, and we will continue to do so,» and these days, «we do it with more strength by vindicating Democratic Memory» as «we were doing yesterday.»

He emphasized that this is «what they tried to prevent us from doing» and noted that «there are still many people who, 50 years after the dictator’s death, have not understood that in Spain we want to progress and live in democracy and freedom.»

In this regard, Casares recalled that at yesterday’s event, the renaming of streets in Santander that referenced the dictatorship was acknowledged, and it was also celebrated that an event by the Francisco Franco Foundation at a hotel in the city had been prevented.

Therefore, the leader of the Cantabrian Socialists reaffirmed that the PSOE, «with the entire regional executive committee and the strength of the party’s membership and of democrats,» will continue to defend «something that has been very difficult to defend and conquer, which is democracy.»

«In the PSOE, we will not stop until we guarantee the memory, justice, and reparation of all victims of the irrationality of the Franco dictatorship,» he concluded.

AGRADECIMIENTOS Casares began his intervention by thanking the displays of support received by Cantabrian socialists from civil society, as well as the solidarity of the majority of political parties in Cantabria.

However, when asked by the press, he lamented not receiving any messages from the far right, from whom, he said, «we expect nothing.»

He also expressed gratitude for the support and solidarity of the regional president, the ‘popular’ María José Sáenz de Buruaga, as well as the mayor of Santander, Gema Igual, and «prominent» members of the PP who have contacted the socialists.

Additionally, Casares also mentioned the support of the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and several ministers with whom he spoke yesterday.

«They have conveyed all the strength of democracy and support to the entire socialist family of Cantabria, and above all, the message that democrats are always united above all those who threaten freedom,» he emphasized.
