Los ciberdelitos aumentan un 13.1% en Cantabria, la criminalidad disminuye un 5.8%

Conventional crime has decreased by 5.8 percent in Cantabria during the first quarter of the year compared to the same period in the previous year, reaching 4,276, although internet-related crimes continue to rise: they have increased by 13.1%, reaching 1,864, representing one out of every three.

These are data from the Crime Balance of the first quarter of the year published on Wednesday by the Ministry of the Interior, which indicates that the decrease in conventional crime consolidates the downward trend already recorded in 2024 and confirms the autonomous community as one of the safest in Spain, with a crime rate nearly 9 points below the average.

In the decline of common crime between January and March 2025, it is noteworthy that no intentional homicide or consummated murder has been recorded, compared to the three counted in the first three months of 2024, although there have been four attempted ones, while a year ago there were none.

Crimes related to property also sharply decrease. Thus, home robberies continue to decline in the region, with a 11.3% drop, totaling 289, and when taking into account those committed in establishments and other facilities, the decrease is even greater: 13.8%, reaching 414, thus consolidating the downward trend observed during 2024, when the number of robberies fell by 14.6%.

Meanwhile, car thefts have decreased by 26.4%, going from 53 to 39 in the first quarter of this year, and drug trafficking offenses have decreased by 25%, from 28 to 21.

On the other hand, serious and less serious offenses of injuries and tumultuous brawls are 33% less (from 103 to 69).

As for offenses against sexual freedom, they remain practically stable (going from 38 to 37 cases, a 2.6% decrease, registering ten rapes in three months again), while thefts increase slightly, by 2% (from 1,100 to 1,122).

CYBERCRIME ON THE RISE

Conversely, cybercrime continues to rise in Cantabria, growing by 13.1%, reaching 1,814 criminal offenses.

Computer frauds now account for almost one in three crimes committed in the autonomous community – 30.3% of the total, with 1,652 offenses – making this phenomenon one of the main challenges in terms of security. Other types of offenses committed through the Internet grew by 26.2%, reaching 212.

MORE HUMAN AND MATERIAL RESOURCES

The Government Delegate in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, has praised the decrease in crime recorded in Cantabria and has conveyed her congratulations and public gratitude to all the National Police and Civil Guard officers stationed in the region, «excellent professionals, with a vocation for public service, who work on the streets every day for a safer Cantabria.»

In a statement, she highlighted the «sustained effort» of the Ministry of the Interior to strengthen police resources. «We have more than 1,700 officers in our community, 7.1% more than five years ago,» she pointed out.

In this regard, Gómez de Diego stated that the Government of Spain will continue to provide the State Security Forces and Corps «with more human and material resources,» and in this sense, she recalled that the Council of Ministers approved last April the call for 6,032 new positions for the National Police and Civil Guard within the public employment offer for 2025.

«Since 2018, replacement rates exceeding 100% have been applied to recover the 13,077 personnel lost between 2011 and 2017. The Government of Spain will continue along this same path,» she affirmed.
